Parade of Giveaways

So, I'm excited to participate in the Parade of Giveaways this year.

First, I love to do food storage and be prepared.I've been canning like crazy and building up my food storage - especially now - to get ready for winter.

Do you use flaxseed? Do you know what to do with it? Since it is my prize, I thought I'd tell you a little bit about it. This is a 1.5 pound bag of heart healthy golden flaxseed. Flaxseed is full of good Omega-3 fats and provides good amounts of fiber to your diet. Everyone needs more fiber in their diet, right? It is best to eat flaxseed when freshly ground - so your body can absorb the maximum amount of nutrients available from the flax.

This golden flaxseed is an Idaho Preferred product and is a great variety for baking. I add it to almost everything I bake: cookies, breads, muffins, cakes. It even is a great substititue for eggs in your baking recipes. You only need to take 3 Tablespoons cold water and 1 Tablespoon ground flaxseed and whip them together. Allow this mixture to sit until a little slimy (about 1 minute) and you have a great replacement for 1 egg.
Just remember to grind your flaxseed in a spice grinder or a coffee grinder - something that can handle oily seeds. A flour mill is usually not able to handle flaxseed.

RULES TO ENTER THE PARADE OF GIVEAWAYS PRIZE OF FLAXSEED
1 - You must live in the US. I will not ship out of the USA.
2 - Please leave a useful comment on this blog post about my website: www.HiStakes-Spelt.com or about flaxseed or even food storage. Easy, right?  =)
(Mostly, let me know you are interested in entering the parade of giveaways)

Remember all giveaways will run September 1st - September 30th and the flaxseed winner will be announced on October 1st on this blog. Happy blogging and good luck!

Until next time!

I love using flaxseed in recipes! My daughter and I both have celiac disease so we have to substitute other ingredients in for wheat/barley/rye/oats and flax seed is a big part of our diet. I usually try to put at least a 1/4th of a cup in everything I bake. It also makes a great replacement for eggs if you add a little water and let it sit to gel up!

I am excited to start receiving your recipes using flax, all i know is to soak it overnight with a prune, and drink it in the morning-my grandma does this. Thank you!

Since we are gluten free and egg free we use flax alot. I grind it up, add vegetable shavings and dehydrate making wonderful spicy crackers. We also use it in baking in place of eggs.
1 tablespoon spoon ground golden flax seeds
3 tablespoons spoons warm water
let it sit on the counter a couple minutes until it forms a gel. Then it can be used in baking to replace up 1 egg. Do not replace more than 2 eggs this way.
This is an easy item to add to your food storage to use in eggs for baking. (does not work for french toast or scrambled egg dishes though...)

Just an F.Y.I.: if you add the flaxseed to your wheat berries when grinding in mill, you 'should' have no problem. I use the electric WonderMill and it works perfectly. I haven't tried it on it's own, but together, no problem grinding it. :o)

I love flax!! Spelt is my new favorite for pizza dough!! My tip is not for grains, but for water storage (it is my favorite!)

For all of you who can foods, when the jars are empty, fill them up with good water and seal. The jars take up space no matter what, and now you have a little extra water storage :)

Also is there a difference between the dark red flax seed from Bob Red Mill and the Idaho Golden flax seed?

Thanks!

I have to admit, the first thing that comes to my mind when I read "spelt" is a small fish.

Now, though, you've got me thinking of how to use spelt and flaxseed to make pizza crusts.

mmmmm ... spelt

It's great that you offer food items in bulk. I've been looking for more websites that offer bulk foods.

We use a lot of flax seeds in baking. I just got a grinder to use, just for this purpose.

i would like to enter the giveaway. thank you for sharing with us something that is heart-healthy. people need to remember that beyond a 72-hour kit, nutrition becomes important. and so do taste and texture. we live in 'hurricane' country. believe me. and if you have kids at home - store a new game. what a great distraction when you are stuck boarded up in a house for days. you can have good memories from bad times. we always remember 'club katrina'.

I've just recently started learning about flax seed. And I've never heard of Spelt. Your website was very informative, and I look forward to learning more, and trying all these new foods!

I love putting flaxseed in my oatmeal and whenever I make cookies I put flaxseed meal in it. :o)

This is the first time I've seen your blog - and I'm impressed!

Re food storage (I haven't tried flax seed YET - but it's on the way!) - I've done food storage for years. When I lived on the farm we called it preparing for winter!

When I bought from a food cooperative we called it buying in bulk!

Now I'm in a fair to middlin' city - and it's food storage! And I'm a strong advocate.

I even have my son started on it as well - he has bought and created his emergency preparedness kit, and is working on a 30 day food storage. Is STRONGLY interested in my food dehydrator as well as flour grinder. :)

Having consumed quite a bit this past year - I am checking cans to make sure I have the year date on them, updating present inventory and will be buying in more.

I'm so excited to learn that flaxseed can be used as an egg substitute! My youngest was recently diagnosed with an egg allergy, and I've been wondering how to deal with it. What a great, healthy alternative!

Anonymous said...

I love flax seed, especially golden flax. great in chocolate chip cookies. I did visit your spelt site but, since I'm gluten intolerant, I can't use spelt, although I have loved using it before the diagnosis. thanks

As a vegan momma to three monkeys we are simply biscuit hounds and carb it up on a regular basis. I love that you're sharing alternatives to eggs (replacing your egg with flax in your recipe.)

It's been a while since I've been on the girls blog (food storage made easy) but signed up for the 7 day challenge, checked out the new posts and saw you. I'm enjoying the blog and we LOVE flax.

It goes in our bread, our pasta, our smoothies, our yougurt... flax rocks and so does food storage! :)

I have some insulin resistance so I limit my flour to very high fiber flours and I often use a combination of ground flax seed with ground almonds to make my "flour" for muffins and other baked goods. I often make the 5 minute "cake in a mug," recipe which I have adapted for my muffins with no sugar and it works great for times when I am in a hurry or away from home! I love flax!

i was excited to find your site through the Food Storage Made Easy Parade of Giveaways. I discovered spelt when my son was a baby due to his wheat allergy. As I've been focusing more on food storage I've been wishing I could find spelt to store so we could use spelt flour...so coming across your site was serendipitous!

What a great site! I love finding new blogs sharing info on great products and self-sufficiency topics. I've used flaxseed for years and will definitely take a look at your offerings.

I love that you are giving away flaxseed for the Parade of Giveaways. I like using it whole in homemade granola. I also like to use ground flaxseed as an addition to flour. I ran out recently and need to get some more! It's so easy to add into flour or granola--not noticeable but adds some great nutrition.

My family has been a Bosch Kitchen Machine family for more than 30 years. Now, my daughter is learning to make bread with it and when she graduates high school in May, she will probably receive one. Just started using flax seed meal in our homemade protein bars. Looking forward to using it more frequently.

I have never tried flaxseed...but another person's comment talked about helping with arthritis...interesting since my wife has arthritis. I am in the market for a wheat grinder and found your site helpful in comparing the different types, especially liked that you narrowed it down to the top four.
Thanks, Jeff

Flax makes a great oil substitute! Use 3 to 1 instead of vegetable oil, shortening, butter. For instance, replace 1/4 cup oil with 3/4 cup ground flax meal. It has tons of fiber along with healthy omega-3 fats!
